This is a real adventure, not a sightseeing tour. We’ll be far from cities, roads, and reliable Wi-Fi. Good physical fitness is necessary, and a recommended cold-weather packing list will be sent once you register. The itinerary is subject to change due to weather or other conditions on the ground.
Day by day
The itinerary
Day 1
Land in Ulaanbaatar
I pick you up at the airport or meet you at the hotel. We check gear, load the vans up with a good stock of beer for the long rides, go over the route, then head out for a group dinner and a look at a few of Ulaanbaatar's bars.
Day 2
Golden Eagle Festival
Full day at the Golden Eagle Festival watching Kazakh hunters compete with their golden eagles. That night we board the night bus to Mörön. Be warned: it is a 12 hour ride, so bring something warm and plan to sleep on the bus.
Day 3
Mörön & the deer stones
We roll into Mörön in the morning, meet our driver, and visit the Uushigiin Övör deer stones, carved 3,000 years ago. Lunch and a stop at the local market, then on to a guesthouse on the shore of frozen Lake Khövsgöl.
Day 4
A full day on the ice
The whole day belongs to Lake Khövsgöl, one of the deepest freshwater lakes on earth, frozen solid. Horse sledding across the ice and time to walk and explore the frozen surface.
Day 5
Over the pass to Tsagaannuur
The hardest driving day. Eight plus hours of rough track over the Jigleg Pass through the Khoridol Saridag mountains, driving on the lake ice where we can, all the way to Tsagaannuur, the last village before reindeer country.
Day 6
Into the reindeer camp
Slow morning in Tsagaannuur sorting border permits, then out to the herders' winter camp. Tonight we sleep in a teepee with the reindeer around us.
Day 7
Horses into the mountains
We saddle up and ride a full day into the snowy mountains to where the reindeer graze. If you're up for it, you can try riding a reindeer yourself.
Day 8
A day with the Tsaatan
A full day with the Tsaatan herders. Help with the herd, see how they live off the land, and learn about their shamanic traditions. This is what we came for.
Day 9
Ride out & the nomad family
Back in the saddle and out of the mountains, then a night with a nomad family in their ger. Mutton, milk tea, and a stove burning all night.
Day 10
The long road south
Early start. We stop at a river that never freezes even at minus 45, cross the sacred Darkhad 13 Ovoos pass, then it's the 12 hour bus back to Ulaanbaatar, arriving late.
Day 11
Homeward
Airport transfer and flights home, or stay an extra night and hit Ulaanbaatar's bars with me.
Routing may shift with weather, ferries, flight schedules, or ground conditions. You’ll get a final day-by-day packet four weeks before departure.
The people we are going to meet
The Tsaatan reindeer herders
The Tsaatan are one of the last nomadic reindeer-herding cultures left on earth. For centuries they have moved through the taiga of northern Mongolia, living in teepee-like orts and tending small reindeer herds that provide milk, transport, and spiritual connection.
Their culture is older than borders. Shamanism is not a performance here; it is the framework for daily decisions, healing, and relationship with the land. A visit to a winter camp is not curated tourism. It is a genuine exchange in one of the most isolated places most travelers will ever reach.
By the time we arrive at Lake Khövsgül, we will have left pavement, cell towers, and warm hotel lobbies far behind. The cold is real, the distances are vast, and the silence is total. That remoteness is the point. The winter landscapes are stark and beautiful, and the people who survive in them are even more remarkable.
